I think Max is on the same diet as my brother's cat (Shadow, the 16 pound monster). And yes, the couch is nice. Good colour choice too!
I don't think he's lost any weight. He screams bloody murder if you don't feed him on time! It's not like he couldn't live off his fat for a few weeks or anything!!
